BIOL 1004 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Chordate, Cestoda, Love Dart
Document Summary
Animal development: after a sperm fertilizes an egg, a zygote is formed and undergoes rapid division called cleavage, the cleavage forms a multicellular ball called a blastula. One end of it folds inward during the gastrulation phase: a pouch is formed inside the blastula from the gastrulation, layering into different germ layers that have different functions. (see slides for diagram and description) Cnidarians (jellyfish, anemone, corals) have only 2 germ layers (endo- and ectoderm) so they are called diploblastic. A (cid:862)true gut(cid:863) is (cid:374)e(cid:448)er for(cid:373)ed so the(cid:455) feed a(cid:374)d defi(cid:272)ate through the sa(cid:373)e passage i(cid:374) the body. In contrast, all other animals will have a mouth and an anus, surrounded by another tube that is called the body cavity. The mesoderm completely fills the space between the ectoderm and the endoderm.
