When two historically separated species come back together, it creates hybrid zones. Example: chickadees in north america - the black-capped chickadee and the carolina chickadee are geographically separated however there is a quite distinct hybrid zone along the midline of the us. Example: fire-bellied toads and yellow-bellied toads in europe. This small area is known as the hybrid zone. In the yellow-bellied toad population, there is a high prevalence of a particular allele. When you reach the hybrid zone, it plummets down in frequency, and then in fire-bellied toad range, it is minimal. This indicates that these two species do sometimes reproduce with each other, however the offspring do not tend to live very long (hybrid (cid:862)inviability(cid:863)). In northern europe, there are pied flycatcher birds. In southern europe there are collared flycatchers, and in the middle, both species inhabit the area.
