While on the voyage at the galapagos islands, he noticed that, in turtles especially, each island had slightly different species but they all had similar characteristics. Their differences were enough to characterize them as different species however. In finches, he also noted differences between the different species in their beaks but also their similarities. He hypothesized that the species on the islands we different variants on turtles and finches from the mainland. Adaptation: inherited characteristics of organisms that enhance their survival and reproduction in specific environments.
