If architecture was stripped to its basics, it is merely a primitive hut. He is looking backwards but not going into the greek vs. roman architecture debate at the time, not even egypt, but an imaginary past before even the oldest civilizations which does not have its authority in any human source. The primitive hut, then, is the ideally simplistic architecture. There is another benefit to the primitive hut, a temple fa ade. Laugier was a man of his time, neoclassicism was in full swing, greek styles were moving into vogue, so, laugier was imagining the past to establish his presence. It is notable that when he attempts to envision a new architecture, he foreshadows the classical temple. Original first principles of architecture being applied to modern building.
