When an outcome doesn"t happen: (key doesn"t work in door: vary response (jiggle key, try diferent key, give up. Fox always goes to special valley to hunt: one day goes to the valley and there"s nothing to hunt, fox looks a litle further, but gives up or goes to ind somewhere else to hunt. Experiment with rats: had to hit 3 levers to get food, one day, tried and didn"t get food, varied the response- tried pressing one lever 3 imes, then one lever twice and another lever, then eventually give up. Frustraion- can lead to aggression: a pigeon who no longer gets food when pecks can atach another pigeon in a cage, don"t get what you want from the vending machine, might kick the machine. Do we really forget the associaion: may never forget associaion, evidence that exincion does not erase learning, spontaneous recovery if a rest is introduced ater exincion, responding will recover.
