Josh foer: competed in world memory championships, memorize random poetry, cards, etc very quickly, ex. Simon reinhard, may 2015: 52 cards, order is memorized, then shuffled, and then asked to reorganize the cards back into the order of the original deck. Psyc 2p45: the time that matters is how long you take to memorize, took simon 24 seconds to memorize the cards. Josh trained in the tricks that make encoding work well (elaboration: good memorization requires elaboration, author of moonwalking with einstein, three ways to make elaboration effective. It should be visual: method of loci (memory palace, typically best used for memorizing discrete items like a grocery list, choose a place you know very well and have a lot of meaning for them, ex. It should be deep: makes processing deep, hyde and jenkins (1973) study, 1: rate pleasantness, read the word but had to think about what it is and what to rate it.
