PSYC 2P20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Electrophysiology, Internal Validity, Behaviorism
Document Summary
The study of the way in which the mind processes information. Involves the way we take in, make sense of, and use information from the outside world. How we make decisions, remember things, see things, etc. The study of the acquisition, storage, transformation, and use of knowledge. Some cognitive experiments were performed in the late 1800"s and early 1900"s. Mostly stopped with the popularity of behaviourism around 1920 should only study observables (e. g. input & behaviour) Black box of mental processing unknown/unobservable; wasn"t studied for 40 years. 1960"s: cognitive psychology exploded in the sense of its ultimate goal. Interest in experimentation, greater precision of measurement (keeping things clean and tidy; making conclusions), quantification of variables (things are measurable) Influenced by growing knowledge of the brain over time neurosciences have taught us a lot about how the brain works. Influenced by social climate (e. g. , less isolated, more applied) applying to the real- world (e. g. this can reduce accidents by 10%, etc. )
