KINE 2P95 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Attentional Shift, Explicit Knowledge, Sociology Of Sport
Document Summary
The selection of a subset of stimuli from our immediate world, and allowing only those stimuli to be processed into awareness for conscious control of behaviour . Attention is limited: certain information can be processed at one time, other information must be ignored or processed at a later time. Certain focuses of attention are associated with peak performance: direction vs. width of attention. Associative: focus on physical movements, sensations, pace, or speed. Ex: focus on breathing while running; focus on flicking your wrist while taking 3-point shot. External: focus on effects of movements on environment or environmental stimuli. Dissociative: focus on environmental information or daydreaming. Ex: focus on jumping far past the line in long-jump; listening to music while exercising. Broad: focus on numerous stimuli at one time. Open skills: environment is variable and unpredictable: reactive response sports ex: soccer, basketball, rugby, mountain biking. Narrow: focus on one stimulus at one time.
