77 views4 pages

Document Summary

Wind-up robot vs. the satyr: we think the robot is not free in its action. It is not responsible for everything that it does: satyr differs by degree of complexity, therefore, the satyr is not morally responsible. Just like wind up robot, satyr is determined by his makeup and his external factors. But, human beings are not all that different from the satyr: we are incredibly complex, of physical and material parts, entirely predictable, robot-like entities. Gorr says you are not committed: solve problem by introducing into the mix like the soul, free-will, non-physical, material substance, only an idiot would think that things happen without cause. We think robots are unconscious but humans are conscious & can therefore, make choices: making choices seems to be the key to making choices, all of our choices, and desires are caused by our internal makeup.
