Labour unions provide workers with vehicle to promote collective interests w/respect to employers, amplifying ability to influence their terms & conditions of work through legally binding collective agreement. W/o agreement, workers left to fend themselves in workplace, subject to arbitrary management rules & producers w/few rights and less power. Unions stronger when members exhibit greater solidarity w/one another. Solidarity grows stronger when union members attract support of community stakeholders. Strikes, demonstrations & battles w/employers = important, but rep only small part of what unions do. Workers need to act collectively to improve their working lives. Achieved through workers(cid:495) collective struggles : right to join unions, bargain collectively w/employers, 8 hour days, employment standards, legislation, workers(cid:495) compensation, health and safety legislation, pay equity, anti-discrimination laws. Skills required to operate union taught to members through union-organized training & educational programs. Beyond the workplace, unions are a key vehicle for achieving a better world.
