Document Summary
What is it: an approach that seeks to make clearer some hidden values, positions and perspectives re: race, class, politics, gender and identity. This approach believes (as do its advocates) that language is at root social and discourse reflects and constructs the social world. What does it do: a critical one who seeks to highlight social relations of power constructed by or related to discourse use. What type of researcher uses such an approach: detailed textual analysis to explanation and interpretation of analysis. Tracing underlying (or somewhat hidden or obscured) ideologies from linguistic features of text, unpacking particular biases and presuppositions underlying the text, and relating the text to other texts and to peoples experiences and beliefs. Theoretical purpose: to help correct a widespread underestimation of the significance of language in the production, maintenance and change of social relations of power.
