Intc lecture #6 - continuation of intercultural communication competence. [intercultural] communication continually involves misunderstanding caused by misperception, misinterpretation & misevaluation (p. 2) People from other cultures see, interpret & evaluate things differently & consequently act upon them differently. All behavior makes sense through the eyes of the person behaving & that logic & rationale are culturally relative. Taking in sensory information/date & applying it to the real world, making something happen. Perception is culturally determined: social cues, signaling what belongs to us, what matters & what doesn"t matter, etc. *we therefore see things that do not exist & do not see things that do exist* Our interests, values & culture act as filters & lead us to distort, block & even create what we choose to see & hear. We perceive things according to what we have been trained to see, according to our cultural map. We see what we are trained to see.
