HLSC 2P49 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Health Belief Model, Slow-Wave Sleep, Zumba
Document Summary
Many barriers to engaging in health behaviours: cultural, attitudes, economic, need theories of health behaviour to overcome some of these barriers and improve health. Health belief model: belief in vulnerability/threat, belief that a certain behaviour will reduce vulnerability, cues to action. Missing another belief: self-efficacy: sense that a person can actually do/complete the behaviour that will reduce the threat. Lack of belief in competence, it can prevent involvement. Belief about one"s ability to complete a behaviour. Ex(cid:524) some exercises that they don"t think they can do ex. zumba: don"t think they can do it. Need a sense of vulnerability and a cue to action. Need a belief that the behaviour will work to decrease the threat. Need a sense that it can actually be done. Health behaviour is partly motivated by fear. Health behaviour is often determined by self efficacy. Fear should be high, but how high do the exact opposite) Better with adolescents and adults than with kids.
