HLSC 2P49 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Norman Cousins, Dependent And Independent Variables, Cardiovascular Disease
Document Summary
Mind (ex. stress) and physical health and theories. Study single individual or group in an intense way. Often multiple techniques are used to do a detailed study. Many case studies in health and medicine. Often times a first way of examining something that provides an insight or depth of understanding. Used within a context of new and rare cases. Do variables go together or vary together (is there a relationship between two variables) Some variables can not be experimented upon (ethics) ex) stress. Disadvantages of correlation surveys: no cause/effect (cid:523)doesn"t say what causes what(cid:524) 3 possibilities: 1) sex causes better heart health, 2) heart health causes more sex, 3) third (unknown) variable that is causing both ex) good personality. But unlike correlation, the main goal is to find cause and effect. Change/manipulate one variable/situation and see how that affects another. The variable that"s manipulated (potential cause) is called the independent.
