Drugs= chemical or natural substances designed to alter physiology and/or bodily function. Psychoactive substance = chemical or natural substances that alter consciousness; most often associated with substance abuse disorders. Classes of drug at risk for substance abuse. Mdma (ecstasy), ketamine, ghb, rohypnol, lsd (acid), methamphetamine. Top 3 substances used by college students in 2019. Mood or substance use disorder = substance use disorder, mood disorders and general anxiety. Substance use disorder= alcohol abuse or dependence, cannabis abuse, other abuse. Abuse disorder is not limited to drugs and alcohol. Drugs/ alcohol > neurotransmitters > changes in cognitive experience and behavior. Effects of drugs on normal neurotransmitter release and function. Disruption of normal neurological circuits of rewards, motivation and memory. Compulsive need to increase exposure to a substance or to exhibit a behavior with strong potential for harm. Characterized by craving, loss of control, need for reinforcement and tolerance. Opium, morphine, herion, methadone, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, meperidine, fentanyl.
