World health organization definition: a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his/her own abilities; can cope with normal stresses of life; can work productively; is able to contribute to his/her community. Institute of medicine (mental illness) definition: a condition that meets dsm-5 diagnostic criteria for mental or substance abuse disorders; this includes presence of both significant levels of symptomatology and impairment in functioning. Institute of medicine (mental health problems) definition: difficulties that may be early signs or symptoms of mental (or behavioural or emotional) health disorders but are not frequent/severe enough to meet diagnostic criteria. *dsm-5 is a huge manual that lists diagnostic criteria for every psychiatric disorder recognized by american and canadian health systems. It is used to diagnose illnesses in clinical settings and with community populations; and allows for collection of accurate public health statistics about the diagnosis and prevalence of psychiatric disorders*
