Well, that"s a bad thing, too: why is addiction bad, some people are addicted coffee, running , degeneracy, connected to other values (citizenship, economic failure, social danger. Scourge of the world: drugs like opium were really not widespread, alcohol considered far more dangerous, seen as a demoralizing substance, the ideas of its effects were frightening to some people, the anti-alcohol temperance movement was huge. Prohibition in ontario, 1916-27: provincial concern, wartime measure, ended 191, many provinces expanded, but it was soon found to be more trouble than it was worth, couldn"t stop people from drinking.
