S (danes especially) not an unknown people to the franks/carolingian rulers. Contacts resuling from expansion of frankish military power- saxony. Franks knew these peoples; they knew the franks. Frankish sources/chroniclers oten well informed about the goings on in denmark etc. Able to get further inland to places like paris.
