The systems approach: an old idea, back again, can also think of this in terms of commoner"s laws of ecology , everything is related to everything else, everything must go somewhere, nature knows best, there"s no such thing as a free lunch, definitions (see glossary at the back of text, a collection of things that are somehow related or organized (ex. Open versus closed (figure 11. 1: depends on how you define the system boundaries, the smaller the scale you consider, the less this is true with respect to matter, example using people as matter, earth (cid:224) closed, dhowes (cid:224)open, for the earth as a whole, open with respect to energy, closed with respect to matter. Negative: flow of stuff in one pathway increases the flow of stuff in another pathway, flow of stuff in one pathway decreases the flow of stuff in another pathway.
