Generic shift from problem comedy to genre we could call romantic tragicomedy. Winters tale is second of 5 romantic tragedies that he wrote during his last 6 years as a playwright. Pay attention to how very differently these plays are constructed. Time is important in both plays, but very differently. Renovation and return to literary and dramatic genre that had gone out of style. Romantic tragic comedy popular during early years of professional theatres. Characteristic: tendency to span vast distances in space and time: one critiques way that it jumps from country to country and place to place, typical use of time. Winters tale does leap from place to place- sicilia to bohemia and back. Does cover a huge block of time, 16 years in two hour real time. Genre according to critics is absurd, violates dramatic standards established by ancient examples (classical greek and latin)
