Recognizing significance depends on practice and your agenda. Cohen"s song uses a racist epithet but is quite progressive in its representation of gender politics. For instance, it would likely be too much analysis to write an essay on leonard cohen"s use of commas in famous blue raincoat . Zooming in to that microscopic focus would probably not produce significant results. It would be a little like reviewing the air conditioning unit on a car like this. It"s obviously not the important thing about the car, just as cohen"s use of commas is not the most important thing about his writing. On the other hand, writing an essay on his use of persona in that song could be very instructive.
