Almost every educational theorist said education would make us morally better: just in different ways. Many attempts to make education morally beneficial: moral education, character education. Aim: to address moral decline in society. Developmental psychologists (interested in how people develop) Piaget: children progress through stages in their cognitive (mental process, how you think related to knowledge) development, improving their ability to think, reason, etc. Kohlberg: children progress through stages in their ethical reasoning development, improving their ability to reason and think about ethical issues. Children move through stages that are: distinct (separate from each other, predictable (we aware of the change, coherent (each stage makes sense, fits together, improvement (becoming a better person????) In these stages, you are moving towards a higher ideal. Each stage is more adequate at responding to moral dilemmas than the last: a higher stage is better" than the last one, higher stages allow people to handle more complex problems.
