Document Summary

In the meeting, a surgical procedure may be attempted where the brain of a severely disabled boy, sam, would be transplanted into the body of a mentally handicapped boy, tommy, to solve tommy"s problematic behavior. Tommy"s problems, and help relieve angst from tommy"s father harry. However, harry is concerned whether or not it will actually be tommy who awakens from the surgery if it were to occur. The story provokes thoughts about personal identity and its nature. Professor john perry argues in his paper will tommy vladek survive?, that he strongly believes that it would not be. It is my belief that john perry is correct in his argument, and that tommy vladek would not survive the operation that would leave sam"s brain in his body. I will contest this by analyzing and commentating on the stronger arguments made by john perry, as well as examining the personal beliefs of the main characters in the story.
