Athens: acropolis: two most important building: parthenon and erechtheion (cultic centre) Parthenon metopes: decorated with lots of sculptural material to embellish the building but to also tell the people stories (just like the temple of zeus, external sculpted panels of marble, scenes of greeks vs. others , usually easterners. Others means they don"t fit the standards of greek. Society: greeks vs. lapits, symbolic of triumph of the civilized world over barbarism, ex. Persians = east vs. west: underneath the temple is an example of carving, parthenon frieze, a long sculpted panel that runs outside of the temple, runs on inside = a long narrative procession scene. 1 x 160m: however this one runs on the inside and it is a long narrative procession scene, their willingness to carve this for athena. Parthenon frieze: very difficult to view, shows: citizens in procession, = panathenaia festival, at end: offering of peplos.
