Socialization, reproduction and performativity approaches to gender identity. Restates wider distinction in social science theory between. Not historical but the approaches are considered to be older & still in use. Objective/representative or empirical research in which knowledge is a mirror of nature : reflection of reality, understanding how things really are in the world, includes structural functionalist, marxist, positivist approach. Structure that is really; affect people intimately & directly. Functionalist = every thing & everyone has a function. Marxist = society is structured with the rich & the poor (struggle between the two) Positive = we can understand the human mind; things we can mirror back into our research (research wants to actively reflect what is going in reality) What role does it play: perception = different outlooks for everyone, no such thing as a value-free social science, clifford geertz humans embedded in webs of meaning that they themselves have spun.
