What is race": categorization using physical traits: Facial features: lips, eyes, eye lids, nose. Asian, south asian, arab, caucasian, black, latino, aboriginal. Its hard to categorize millions of people by one term/name: more differences among them than similarities, basis for fear, violence, racism. Major context in the lives of many children/youth. 2010; walmart under fire for selling black barbie at price of white barbie. Smelly: bad drivers, terrorist, well endowed, exotic/sexy, deceitful. Smart: good at math, athletic, docile, dangerous. Effects of racism on visible minority refugee youth in nfld/labrador. Old: based on skin colour, culture, nationality, religion. New: fitting in, passing, blaming victim, inconsistent (subtle) Old racism: chinese workers built cpr on /day. Japanese internment, wwii: cultural genocide of indigenous peoples: First nations (first people of the land), metis, and inuit. Residential schools (1876-1996: cultural genocide, also known as boarding schools (children were stripped of their culture/religion) 150,000 (30%) indigenous children sent to boarding schools.
