Information sensing: environment: brain also sorts important information & ignore irrelevant information. Importing information: analyzing & storing information, generate appropriate behavioural response. Franz gall postulated that brain not a unitary organ: brain was approx. 35 different organs working as a unit, each specific to a different function: gall believed that personality traits were correlated with cranial bumps, believed that each bump would increase in size with use. Gall"s postulations were tested by flourens that all parts of cortex participate in all mental functions: removed part of animal brains to test to see if behaviours changed. Parallel processing: if part of the brain gets damaged, that other parts of the brain can sometimes recover part of the functions of the damaged part.
