Digestion: chemical and mechanical breakdown of food into absorbable units. Absorption: movement of material from gi lumen to ecf. Motility: movement of material through the gi tract as a result of muscle contraction. Secretion: movement of movement from cells into lumen or ecf. Alimentary canal organized a number of different ways: flow of material through it & layering of the tissues. A lumen, or interior, through which the food is moving. An intestinal wall, or epithelium, that is in direct contact with the food on one side and in contact with blood vessels on the other side.
