BIOL 1F26 Lecture 2: bio lec 2

60 views8 pages

Document Summary

We look to increase our understanding of biological cycles. They are dynamic in nature continually change. Most are linked to each other (ie. change one cycle and another will be affected as well) We will cover some basic examples of imbalances to some cycles. Main focus this week: nitrogen, carbon, and ph. Nitrogen gas (n2), ammonia or ammonium (nh3 or nh4), nitrite (no2) and nitrate (no3) The nitrogen cycle also has a few biological processes: nitrogen xation, nitri cation, assimilation, ammoni cation, denitri cation. Key point: changing the levels of any one component of a cycle (in any cycle) will change the rates of every other part of the cycle: e. g. nitrogen xation: n2 > nh3 > nh4. Saturday, may 21, 2016: e. g. nitri cation: nh4 > no2 > no3, e. g. denitri cation: no3 > n2, e. g. assimilation: no2 or no3 > used by cells to grow/reproduce, e. g. ammoni cation: decaying matter & waste > nh3.
