Biotechnology- the science of using living organisms or the products of living organisms for human benefit or to benefit human surroundings: ex: to make a produce or solve a problem using biological sciences. Microbial biotechnology- fermentation, vaccines, diagnostics (medical or research) Agricultural biotechnology- designer crops, bioreactors for desirable agents (medicine) Pharmaceuticals- the design, testing and production of new drug treatments for various. Marine biotechnology- the development of either marine animal or plant production techniques typically for consumption purposes. Animal biotechnology- designer animals, bioreactors for antibodies, therapy related diseases proteins/hormones. We have been using varying degrees of biotechnology techniques prior to our modern understanding of science for thousands of years (gene manipulations, genetically modified organisms) Programs and procedures designed to modify traits in domestic species, known as artificial selection, related to natural selection. Primary difference between natural and artificial selection: how the parents are chosen. Natural selection- due to natural variation in reproductive success and the survivability.
