National culture is defined as the set of norms, behaviors, beliefs and customs that exist within the population of a sovereign nation. International companies develop management and other practices in accordance with the national culture they are operating in. A group of people who share a unique way of life within a larger, dominant culture is called a subculture. A subculture can differ from the dominant culture in language, race, lifestyle, values, attitudes, or other characteristics. A nation may have a multitude of subcultures that are very different than the perceived national culture. The study of subcultures often consists of the study of symbolism attached to clothing, music, and other visible affectations by members of subcultures.
