PSYC 228 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Kid A, Cognitive Development, Social Change
Document Summary
An issue is that people have been designing playgrounds from an adult perspective, not a kids perspective. Many hunter-gatherer tribes let their kids play free from dawn to dusk, because they say that"s how they learn skills. Many parents wish they could let their kids play, but they don"t think it"s a safe environment. Back in the 50"s, there was more time for kids to play. Less homework, less school time, less work for young people to do. Since the 50"s, play has decreased, while depression and anxiety has shot up. Additionally, the suicide rate has shot up as well. It has become a worse world for children, not necessarily for adults. Seen a decline in young people"s sense of control over their own lives. Additionally, rise in narcissism and decline in empathy and creative thinking. Play is where children learn to interact with peers, become creative, and learn in general. More school isn"t always a good thing.
