Document Summary

W14: obesity leads to social and cognitive problems. Difficulty mentally manipulating items, they see the real world. Centration: the experiment where children are shown 2 cups that are the same volume, asked if they are the same or different (same). Then one is put in a long cup, same question asked, and the child thinks one is longer. The preoperational stage is also characterized in egocentrism, which means that young children have a hard time taking the perspective of someone else. There is also a lack of identity constancy. This is knowledge that the appearance of an object doesn"t necessarily correspond to its reality. This is why young children get scared of costumes. How to avoid conflict: providing snacks/cups. Notion of intimacy: the idea that intimate objects are kind of alive. Scale errors: limitations in representation: children have a hard time seeing an object both as an object in and of itself, and as a symbol for something else.
