PSYC 228 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Frontal Lobe, Cortisol, Shyness
Document Summary
W12: you might find a child that wasn"t raised in good conditions, but may end up doing very well. This is due to genetic (biological) material that influences how susceptible they are to parental care. Biological basis of temperament (these children are destined to be shy, unless they have a certain parental outcome) Relatively more active in right frontal lobe. Childhood maltreatment is a universal risk factor for antisocial behaviour, but (never seen a homeless person who had a good childhood) 5-htt gene: short allele, deficits in serotonin uptake. In some studies, this leads to increased depression, suicide, increased aggression: long allele. Mother reared: behavioural evidence show this. For example, monkeys with short 5-htt, when given the chance, drink a lot more alcohol. Researchers had a lot of 14 month old children come to the lab. Put them through a bunch of tasks to measure predisposition to shyness.
