The study of how different processes will change over time. How they change from the moment of conception to death. Main research designs: type of design will determine conclusion. Longitudinal studies: they track the developments of a cohort over time (note: a cohort is a group of individuals born at the same time. ) Main advantage of longitudinal: allows us to look at true developmental effects. You can see behaviour a happened before behaviour b, etc. Cross-sectional studies: comparing people of different ages at the same time. Limitation of cross-se(cid:272)tio(cid:374)al: (cid:449)o(cid:374)"t (cid:271)e sure if effe(cid:272)ts fou(cid:374)d are true de(cid:448)elop(cid:373)e(cid:374)tal effects (different people), everyone grew up at different times (environmental). Advantage of cross-sectional: can collect all the data at the same time, really fast in comparison to other studies, you get the data straight away, cost efficient. Sequential studies: several cohorts as they age, different people of different ages over time. Advantage of sequential: get data a little faster than longitudinal study.
