Document Summary

Monocular cues (motion parallax: things that are closer appear to move much faster than things in the distance. For example, when you are driving in a car, the trees closest to the road appear to be. Moving quickly, while trees and other objects off in the distance appear to be. Binocular cues: relying on information from two eyes, convergence- as objects get closer, the eyes move inwards and converge, sending cues to the brain that an object is moving closer, retinal disparity- each eye has a different view. Another cue to the brain that an object is getting closer. Perceptual constancy: objects maintain their size, shape and colour, despite changes in their retinal cue, size constancy. Perceived size of retinal image x perceived distance. When the object gets closer, the size of the retinal image increases and perceived distance decreases. Perceived size remains constant: various cues are often used to inter perceived distance.
