Basics: definitions, ecosystem = communities + physical environment. Spatial overlap, apples growing a little bit into a corn field. Crucial to character of community because other species can"t persist without them. It"s not just other species, the entire community breaks down. Can get into some grey zones, but examples are clear cut. Ex: a beaver builds a dam, water becomes stagnant, specialized fish establish themselves, algae grows, etc: corophium is keystone species in diana"s experiment. Taking them out, seabirds would starve and be lost without them: e. g. , sea otters, kelp, urchins otters love to eat sea urchins, as long as they"re doing the, the urchins aren"t knocking back the kelp. For the purple one we"re far more likely to get more species. If we start thinking about economics for spices, waterfowl, ducks unlimited is powerful lobbyist in us. Could also say that bacteria and fungi don"t weight much, so lets focus on larger species.
