Document Summary

Pavement performance can be defined as the ability to serve traffic safely and comfortably over a period of time . In other words, it is a measure of the adequacy with which the pavement fulfils its design purpose. The methods used in performance evaluation of pavement structure generally depend upon the importance of the project and the availability of funds. They may range from simple subjective estimation of general pavement quality and appearance to elaborate procedures involving strength evaluation, determination of riding quality and quantification of distress mechanism. A summary of a few well-known methods of pavement performance evaluation is given below: pavement roughness (distortion) Three methods of measuring pavement roughness are summarized. These are: (a) present performance rating (ppr) method. In this method a large panel, preferably more than six people, estimates subjectively the riding quality of a pavement section.
