Lecture 1b - methods in diagnosis and assessment. Diagnosis vs. assessment: how do we identigy between forms of illnes, e. g. sore leg = broken bone or crushed bone, thus need for diagnostic classification, break down of symptoms based on commonalities. Presentation, etiology, etc: e. g. sadness vs fear vs obsession, thu - diagnosis & assessment. Diagnosis: the labels use to describe, classify, and organize various symptom presentations. International classification of diseases (icd: both offer descriptive accounts of mental health conditions, dsm = psych only, icd = medical and psych, psychology generally adopts dsm-5. Just labels that describe symptoms: not explanations of the phenomenon, still, it"s the (cid:271)est syste(cid:373) (cid:449)e ha(cid:448)e. Invalid or unreliable assessment = invalid or unreliable diagnosis: good assessment important but difficult. Why: disorders require symptoms but people tell stories, many diagnoses (e. g. dsm-iv = 297, dsm-5 = 300+, many disorders are highly similar, many disorder co-occur (e. g. anxiety and depression)
