Document Summary

Classical theories of class: coming out of industrial revolution. Relationship in means of production- economic mode of production shapes society, class derived by economic system. The bourgeoisie (capitalists, owners of capital)- factories, land, raw materials, live on profits. Proletariat- workers, working class, do not own capital, sell labour for wage. Capital- productive (money making) asset (eg factory, companies, buildings- not your home) Surplus value (profit)- only item in chain of production that adds value- labour. Eg workers earns (10ph- /day), creates value of ph- /day, surplus value = Both want to produce goods, but want opposite things in the production process- creates class conflict, want the economics for the above to be different. Class-in-itself: si(cid:373)ilar (cid:449)orki(cid:374)g (cid:272)o(cid:374)ditio(cid:374)s, pa(cid:455), ho(cid:373)e life, (cid:271)ut does(cid:374)"t (cid:373)ea(cid:374) (cid:373)u(cid:272)h. Class-for-itself: transform from above when colleagues recognise they have a shared interest of social and economic position, together make a difference, individually cannot do much.
