Week 2: stigma and labeling: means by which we name things that creates connections with identities. Ideas and understanding change over time: mental health and mental illness as discourse and practice - foucault, goffman, berger and luckmann (1966) - the social construction of reality. Stigma and labeling as external and internal: what informs what we know. The latest dsm: the manual that diagnoses each mental health disorder, debates on its validity. Psychiatric frame: move to a scientific understanding, mental health is a health rather than moral or social issue. Focus on identification mental illness/disease and addressing symptoms/fixing/curing. I am an illness - essentialising mental health as identity: mental and physical health are quite different, the interaction of physical and mental processes in the social world is invisible, access to services -> essential for bureaucratic needs. Social factors play a significant part in shaping mental health.
