12 views13 pages

Document Summary

Sensory memory (earliest form of memory): brief literal copy of event. Very useful because the mechanism responsible for visual perception always operate on the icon. The existence of iconic memory increases the time for which visual information is available to us. Iconic memory is preattentive (it does not depend on attention) how many you can recall. Ex: brief expression of a certain group of letters, writing them down and seeing. Show a brief display of letters, only need to write down one row of letters but not tell you which row to recall until the letters are gone. People can recall on average 3 to 4 letters. If you could write all the letters in the row, then for a brief amount of time you had all 12 of those letters available. It"s easier to extract more letters when then connect (ex: the letters make up a word) Short - term memory : buffer for temporary maintenance of information.
