Immersion - both things you write and what you find. How actors interact in context of their social world. Participant observation: researcher participates in the setting (insider) Non participant observation: researcher is outside of research context. Discrepancies between what people say/what actually happens. Rich, in depth accounts of the environment. Identifies areas of change which need to be understood. Quality of data depends on quality of rapport. Purposive: participants selected on purpose - they provide rich information directly about the research problem. Activities - visiting, waiting, wards, visual stimuli, information giving. Space, actor, act, activity, event, object, time, goal, feeling. Allows the participants to have some direction. A different way for participants to express their emotion. Valuable for children, young people, and issues that are difficult to express. Eg. drawings, photos, social media, videos, performative methods.
