1990s- early 2000s known as the history wars period, where there was conflict surrounding the school curriculum on australian history and aboriginal history. Indigenous land regions are broken down by language. Pre 1788, there were 250 separate language groups and many more dialects within those groups. Currently indigenous australians make up 3% of the population, at a number of 670,000. Divide in historiography between "new history"/european history in australia vs. ancient/prehistoric. It is estimated that aboriginal people have lived in australia between 60,000 -70,000 years. Clarke (australian historian during the 1960s) stated that australian history only began with. Sydney has been inhabited for an estimated 30,000 years. New historiography attempts to escape the deficit model of aboriginal history presented. Focus on what aboriginal people have done, not what they haven"t done/achieved. Australians of european origin tend not to go back more than 5 or 6 generations, mostly only rural families.
