Document Summary

Acknowledge the fire ecology and fire history of the continent. Note causes and contributing factors and explore meaning of bushfire weather/conditions. Note significant bushfire events in post 1788 australian history. Examine connections between climate change and bushfire activity. Bushfire: an uncontrolled, non-structural (in the landscape) fire burning in grass, scrub, bush or forest areas . Topographically divided in to 2 broad types: flat grassland fires, ex. 2009 victoria black saturday bushfires: move rapidly through the landscape + burn the vegetation they are moving through, faster fire speed because on a relatively gentle slope = less roughness. Lower intensity (not as hot) and burn out quickly: can be extinguished easily with fire trucks, hilly/mountainous fires, ex. 2013 blue mountains fires: slower fire speed + smoulder for days, burn with greater heat and intensity, harder to extinguish in compared to flat grassland fires, often by air, helicopters and aircrafts.
