What is cognitive functioning: mental processes required for day-to-day & (cid:498)higher order(cid:499) functioning - biddle, mental abilities enabling us to receive/process/act on environmental information - middleton, selective attention, task-coordination, planning, maintaining items in working memory - voss. Types of cognitive function: inhibition, holding back/overriding a psychological process, such as stopping/slowing down or reducing the chance of the behaviour occurs, problem solving etc, opposite of inhibition is impulsivity. I. e. stoop test: working memory, ability/capacity to keep information in your head so this information can be used for current actions/responses. I. e. memory test: contextual memory, recall of context (i. e. time/place), errors may be due to distractions or poor information processing skills, set-shifting, ability to think flexibly so different situations may be responded to appropriately. I. e. card test: cognitive flexibility, ability to switch b/w different concepts & to think about several concepts simultaneously. 2: planning, ability to manage tasks, including organizing thoughts/actions & anticipating consequences.
