WEEK 11: BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
WHY DO ORGANISATIONS NEED BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE?
• Business intelligence: methodologies and technology that transform raw data into meaningful and useful info for
business purposes
• Businesses create massive amounts of data
o Storage capacity is becoming almost unlimited, so businesses collect more data at little extra cost
o Need to provide the right info to the right person at the right time
• Data can show patterns and relationships
o Relationships = valuable info that help businesses make better decisions
o Can help forecast changes à e.g. drop in site views = decrease in sales
HOW DOES IS SUPPORT DECISION MAKING?
• Success of org depends on quality of decisions they make
• When decision making involves large amounts of data, IS can make the process more efficient
• Business intelligence (BI) can help the business by:
o Storing and organising large amounts of data – data warehouses
o Making sense of data from data warehouses – business intelligence tools/systems
HOW DOES BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE WORK?
• BI helps orgs to turn company-wide and external data into useful info that supports decision-making at all
organisational levels by…
o Integrating data: from multiple internal and external sources
o Preparing data: implementing data quality + info management methodologies to prepare data for
reporting, intelligence and analysis
o Analysing data: data analysis techniques
• Data Warehouses:
o Purpose: To store and catalogue data for BI processing
o Requires extracting + cleaning of data from various operational databases and sources
§ To improve quality of existing data going into DW
o How does DW work?
§ Regularly copies data from operational databases to create a stack of historical data for analysis
purposes
§ Collates data from external sources
§ Creates meta-data for these large pools of data
• DISTINCTION:
o Operational databases:
§ Used by various IS across the org daily
o Data warehouse:
§ Large storage container, which regularly collects data from operational databases à requires data
cleansing
§ Contains historical data which doesn’t change
§ Used for BI
Document Summary
How does business intelligence work: bi helps orgs to turn company-wide and external data into useful info that supports decision-making at all organisational levels by . Regularly copies data from operational databases to create a stack of historical data for analysis purposes. Creates meta-data for these large pools of data: distinction, operational databases: Used by various is across the org daily: data warehouse: Large storage container, which regularly collects data from operational databases requires data cleansing. What problems does operational data pose for bi systems: operational data is produced as part of the everyday transaction of business, stored in operational databases, problems: Raw collected to meet an immediate business objective. Dirty hence unsuitable for sophisticated bi analyses. Incorrect data: values may be missing, data may be inconsistent, granularity of data not at appropriate level. Making simple calculations on the data: olap, enables executives to make timely decisions, often decision-makers need to view info in different configurations.
