Document Summary

Most multicellular animals on the earth are made out of just four major tissue types. Muscle. giving the cells the ability to contract in a wave- like manner when receiving an action potential (nerve impulse). Smooth muscle functions involuntarily and plays a vital role in the body. Smooth muscle consists of non-striated cells with one nucleus each. There are three different types of muscle that we need to be aware of: Skeletal muscle functions voluntarily, so can be controlled consciously. Skeletal muscle cells are organised (produced in unbranched fibers). The fibers run parallel to each other, and where they overlap, we see vertical stripes called striations. They can each have more than one nucleus (because multiple myoblasts join into myofibrils, that each have their own nucleus, which then go on to form the muscle cells, but their nuclei are all kept). There are no gap junctions between the cells, but each cell is innovated by a nerve impulse independently.
