ANTH1001 Lecture 7: ANTH1001 WEEK 7
Week 7: TAKING STOCK:
• Generalising what you learned
o Use what you have learned about how to analyse an article we have studied to analyse
an article that is new to you and which is studying a different culture
o Use what you have learned about how to compare and contrast articles about two
different cultures to compare a familiar article with with a new one
• What have we learned about analysis?
o Recognising the different aspects of culture: learned, shared, symbolic, material,
integrated
o Recognising the difference between evidence and argument
o Understanding the relationship between evidence and argument
o Recognising that definitions lead to finer analytic distinctions.
• Examples: material, symbolic, sharing
• What have we learned about comparison?
o We are using the definitions as the basis of comparison.
o This means you are comparing
• Arguments
• Relationships between arguments and evidence
o You are NOT arguing that actual beliefs and practices are similar or different
• Culture as a Process:
o Discussion of the relationship between aspects of culture.
o Each aspect of culture may reinforce others
o Aspects of culture may all be involved in livelihood or in the making of persons
o Holism and integration are important to the recognition of culture as a process
