Kidney: either side of the vertebrae, right : cranial extremity fits into a fossa of the liver left: caudal more pendulous function, regulates the volume and composition of the body fluids. It filters the plasma and concentrates waste by extracting fluid for processing. It also maintains the plama water concentration within a range: firm reddish brown organ. It"s a fibrous outer capsule with a parenchyma cortex and medulla: retroperitoneal between the parietal peritoneum and body wall. It has a lobe portion of the medulla and a hilus which is the indention along the medial border where the blood vessel, nerves and ureter pass. It varies within species: carinvores and ruminants: the shape is like a bean, it is unilobar- papillae fused to form a single renal crest. The fluid papillae renal pelvis ureter: ox : has a fissured shape and is multilobular.
